Wallpaper Inspiration

Design:Talbot Cooley Interiors

You already know that we love wallpaper at Alter Madden Interiors! It adds instant character and interest to a space and serves as both art and decor. The options are truly endless when it comes to wallpaper designs, and we’ve found so many new patterns and styles that we love, so we’re sharing them below.

Peel-And-Stick Versus Traditional

Peel-and-stick wallpaper (removable wallpaper) is like a sticker that you adhere to the wall. It’s usually made from vinyl with a sticky back and comes in a roll. To install you just peel the backing off and press it to the wall. This type of wallpaper is great for temporary situations like for a renter, college student or if you’re decorating a space for a short time (like a nursery). It’s also a good option if you want to try a trendy look without being stuck with it for a long time. Removable wallpaper is relatively easy to install, however there can be bubbles that form during installation that are hard to remove. For that reason we recommend ordering extra in case you need to remove it and try again. For take down, you simply peel it off the wall with little to no damage to the surface underneath.

Traditional wallpaper usually requires a professional for installation and is expensive. If you’re looking for a higher-end, designer product made of specialty paper, it’ll most always be in a traditional roll of wallpaper. The finished look of this type of wallpaper has a slight edge over removable wallpaper, which is due to the material and quality. Removable wallpaper has a slight sheen to the finish, and traditional wallpaper can look more like actual paper, but this wouldn’t be noticeable to most people. You might want to choose traditional wallpaper if you know you’ll keep it on for a long period of time, if you’re doing a large space, or if you want a high-end designer product or specialty paper type.

Tip: Always pin a sample of the wallpaper you like to the wall and look at in morning, midday and evening light before you make a final decision.

Tip: Hire a pro to install wallpaper. You don’t want to be disappointed with how it looks when it’s up and could end up spending more money in the long run if you need to start over again.

Tip: If you are new to wallpaper, try it in a smaller confined space so it’s not too overwhelming. Another option is to break up the wall with a chair-rail height beadboard and install wallpaper on the other half of the wall.

Tip: For families with kids, make sure the wallpaper you choose can be cleaned, especially in high-traffic areas! You never know when you might find a crayon drawing on the wall, and lots of wallpaper can be washed with soap and water.

Tip: For smaller rooms, we usually prefer smaller prints. In a larger space, large patterns can make a bold statement.

Tip: When choosing a wallpaper for damp locations like a bathroom, look for vinyl, scrubbable or commercial grade, which means the paper can withstand moisture. Otherwise you should apply a protective varnish over top of non-vinyl wallpaper in a flat finish.
